HOLY BAILOUT - Federal Reserve Now Backstopping $75 Trillion Of Bank Of America's Derivatives Trades

This story from Bloomberg just hit the wires this morning. Bank of America is shifting derivatives in its Merrill investment banking unit to its depository arm, which has access to the Fed discount window and is protected by the FDIC.

This means that the investment bank’s European derivatives exposure is now backstopped by U.S. taxpayers. Bank of America didn’t get regulatory approval to do this, they just did it at the request of frightened counterparties. Now the Fed and the FDIC are fighting as to whether this was sound. The Fed wants to “give relief” to the bank holding company, which is under heavy pressure.

This is a direct transfer of risk to the taxpayer done by the bank without approval by regulators and without public input. You will also read below that JP Morgan is apparently doing the same thing with $79 trillion of notional derivatives guaranteed by the FDIC and Federal Reserve.

What this means for you is that when Europe finally implodes and banks fail, U.S. taxpayers will hold the bag for trillions in CDS insurance contracts sold by Bank of America and JP Morgan. Even worse, the total exposure is unknown because Wall Street successfully lobbied during Dodd-Frank passage so that no central exchange would exist keeping track of net derivative exposure.

Comment by Harold Rainsberger on November 16, 2009 at 7:54pm: I have had some roundy roundies with local talk show hosts ( I don't feel they are in tune with getting people to join meetup groups as they should be, I feel they are afraid of having their thunder stolen) so most of them don't want to talk to me.

However.

I will have a couple others call a few times over the next couple days. Knowing these A.M. jockies, they prolly got there own reasons not to support it properly, but we will try.

Pretty sure we got several Toledoans coming but will wait until Sunday before any prediction is made.

Still have heard nothing on anyone needing a ride from here or along the way.

Maybe if he's keeping track of us it could help him learn a little about how LEGITIMATE patriots go about things, and how much better we can do it without HIM. Ok, enough words wasted on that subject already. Actually i was just thinking it would be nice if somebody would get a good supply of bumper stickers! I'll be glad to pay TWO bucks for one! It will be great to get those DVDs circulating - and all those other things too. ALL sounds great, TW. One other thing i've been thinking - maybe Dave Macko would be good for getting some good speekers. Maybe Walker Todd, or Greg Colridge, and i'm sure Dave could make a good speech himself. Unfortunately i haven't heard anything back from Jim Babka yet. ....Back to the leaf raking fast.
